The Southeastern Community College baseball team is setting a standard of excellence both in the classroom and on the diamond, maintaining an impressive 3.3 average grade point average for the current academic year. Head Coach Robert Burns places a strong emphasis on academics as part of the team's overall success.
"While it's important to perform well on the field, the classroom is where it all begins. We stress to our players that their education should be their primary focus," Burns said. "I'm proud to say our team is excelling academically, with the majority of our players maintaining a GPA of 3.0 or higher."
Thirty-one players have a 3.0 or above GPA, demonstrating a collective commitment to both their studies and athletic pursuits. Burns credits much of the team's academic success to structured support systems, including mandatory study halls and open communication with instructors. "I stress the importance of schoolwork, GPA, and class attendance to our players. I have constant conversations with instructors to ensure our players are staying on track," he said.
The team also participates in group study sessions, where players help one another with class assignments and tutoring.
In addition to fostering a supportive academic environment, Burns encourages his players to keep their eyes on the bigger picture—education first. "While they're here, the goal is to earn a degree, and hopefully, some of our players will have the opportunity to continue their baseball careers at four-year universities. We want them to understand that their education is their ticket to a future, both in sports and life," Burns explained.
Looking ahead to the season, Burns is most excited about the opportunity to work with a dedicated and hardworking group. "I'm looking forward to spending quality time with a group of young men who are maturing not just as athletes, but as individuals," he said. "This team is built on a strong work ethic, and I believe they will continue to excel both in the classroom and on the field."
Southeastern Community College's baseball team is proving that success isn't confined to one area—it's about balance, discipline and striving for excellence in all aspects of life. As the season progresses, Burns is confident that his players will continue to meet and exceed expectations both academically and athletically.
