Southeastern Community College's softball team is excelling both on the field and in the classroom, maintaining an impressive team grade point average of 3.24.
Seven players have earned GPAs of 3.0 or higher, including Salena Johnson, Clara Taft, Emily Graham, Emily Gossett, Annaleese Renslow, Rayne McLees and Grace Riedesel. Johnson and Renslow have 4.0 GPAs. Their academic achievements show the commitment Head Coach Karlyn Stephens places on the balance between athletics and academics.
Stephens holds her players to high expectations, not only on the field but also in their coursework. To ensure academic success, the team participates in mandatory study hall sessions during the fall semester, with additional sessions in the spring during inclement weather. The players also collaborate with one another, often helping each other with assignments and group projects when they share classes.
"I encourage each of our players to maintain a high GPA standard for when they transfer to another college or university to play softball," Stephens said. "It's so important to keep their grades up and keep their credit hours up per semester because their academics determine if they can play or not."
Stephens expressed immense pride in her team, praising their relentless work ethic and dedication. "We are a very scrappy and competitive team," she said. "Our size will not intimidate anyone, but our heart and competitiveness will prevail."
As the spring 2025 season approaches, Stephens is eager to see how her team performs on the field, combining their academic success with their love for softball.
